As a Black Man from the midwest, I love country music, it is what it is. Some people will tell you it isn’t Black music, and those people are wrong. Black people have always been a driving force in country music even if our contributions aren’t always recognized.
For example, country music has been around for decades. But it wasn’t until 2020 when Mickey Guyton was the first, Black woman to be grammy nominated for a solo country performance. This is after 10 years of grinding and being told she was destined to fail if she didn’t do traditional country music. All while radio stations would avoid playing her songs because they didn’t want too many slow singing women.
Well screw those people. Mickey stated in 2019 she chose to write songs about who she was, a Black woman. The song that actually got her nominated was “Black Like Me,” named after the classic book. A song filled with lyrics like “If you think we live in the land of the free, try being Black like me.” Now that’s what I call country.
