In 1962, Sharon Green was born in Wilmington, North Carolina. She would grow up in South Bronx. She started out as a B-Girl, she used to breakdance. But she tried her hand a MCing or rapping and she was pretty good at it. She was a founding member of the group The Funky Four. She stepped away for a few months and they replaced her.
When she came back to the group. They changed the name. Funky Four Plus One. Together they went on a tear. They became the first hip hop group on TV. They recorded vinal records. It’s those records that made Sha Rock the first women to rap on a record. Her style is the obvious inspiration for DMC and MC Lyte. With the chaos of Furious 4 vs Funky 4 which became Furious 5 vs Funky 4 + 1 More she also became the first woman to battle rap.
Lil Kim, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Queen Latifah, Remmy Ma, Trina, Rapsody, Jean Gray, MC Lyte and so many other women have touched the mic and left their mark on hip hop, but to do it they had to be plus one more.
