ABOUT US
"My uncle told me, tell my N*ggas To Read. Cause We In Danger, got every city under a siege." - Bradley T. Jordan
54% of Americans between 16-74 lack proficiency in literacy. There isn’t another way to say it, but that shit is crazy. Most adults no longer read for pleasure and the kids don’t read anymore either. I could tell you my theories on how traditional publishing and education based on a select few “classics,” has led to that. Instead, I’ll just tell you I’m trying to get my people to read more. Not just history, but fiction as well.
However, I also realize you can’t just force people to read history books. It’s tedious, repetitive and often written by people who seem to want it to be as difficult to comprehend as possible. Throughout the diaspora we have a strong history of spreading stories of folklore, religion and our ancestors orally.
I’m also not a fan of people who share their own bastardized versions of history that are filled with misogyny, homophobia, and so on in a way that mimics alt-right talking points. If you wish to learn about Ancient Africa you shouldn’t need to listen to Joe Rogan talking points. They become parodies of the black leaders they claim to be inspired by.
Of course, we’ve also reached a point where schools are out right attempting to ban Black history or even worse tell lies about enslaved people being happily employed and taught skills. I got my first doses of Black History from elders in the family and I suspect that will be more important than ever in the future. Unfortunately, everyone does not have elders to teach them. That’s where I come in. I can’t cover everything, but I can be a starting point.
