Bertram Cope wants nothing more than to understand himself. Moving awkwardly and passively through life he becomes the desire of many for both social and sexual desires. A middle aged woman, two older men, and three women pursue Bertram’s time and energy. Proposals are made and broken. All while Bertram begins to develop intense feelings for his best friend Arthur who may be a homosexual.
The story delicately bobs and weaves around the acceptability of homosexuality while also touching on the ideas of Free Speech, literary criticism and war.
